A lot of puppies seem to be more prone to dandruff or that dry flaky skin. They get it more often than adult dogs do. This is very common in puppies especially those with dark coats since dander is easily seen in dark hair. In most puppies, especially those less than 4 months old and below, the normal sebaceous glands found along the area of the skin tend to function less than in adults. As they mature, lubrication increases because the coat needs more moisture. Factors such as low humidity and dry air likewise contribute to the production of dander. Skin becomes dry and flaky, and itchy.
Cheyletiella, the large mite specie that often cause skin problems to dogs, becomes more visible in puppies. It causes 'walking dandruff' which moves around under the skin scales. It is a real nuisance especially for kennels with lots of puppies. They are quite contagious and infect most dogs especially when one that is infected is in direct contact with another.
The symptoms of Cheyletiella are the white skin flakes along the neck, rump and back areas. Itching is often experienced and observed in dogs infected with it.
The only significant risk involved is hair loss but this is not even common. Excessive flaking and hair loss is therefore not a normal occurrence and a quick stop at the vet's office can be helpful. It could be a cause of a health problem or disease so it is necessary to get hold of your vet to see what is going on. Treatment should be given before it gets too late.
If you want to make sure this is avoided, you should give supplements containing fatty acids. You can also apply oatmeal shampoos and moisturizers to clean the skin and rid it of dander. There are a lot of medicated shampoos and other ant-dandruff supplements available.
If you have several dogs and only one is infected, it is still advisable to treat all dogs just to be sure. Transmission happens quickly so to completely remove them, every pet should be treated. Treatment need to be repeated thrice a day for at least a week.
Puppies are adorable little things and you want to make sure they are properly taken cared of. They are still babies and are quite helpless; moreover, they are also innocent so they are more careless and more prone to such problems. Always keep them clean and healthy to help avoid puppy dandruff. You do not want your pets to be sickly and weak, do you? Always keep a lookout on them and make sure they avoid dandruff problems as much as possible.
